Constable Killed on Duty While Trying to Stop Alleged Sand Smuggling
Chennai: A police constable, who intercepted an alleged sand smuggling tractor, was killed when he was run over by the vehicle, in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on Sunday.

Sub-Inspector P Rajan and constable Kanagaraj, on information that sand was being illegally transported, intercepted a tractor and asked its driver to halt the vehicle.

The driver, however, sped up and in the process, Kanagaraj came under the wheels, resulting in his instant death, police said.

The vehicle has been seized by the police.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said the accused, Suresh, who is the son of a local DMDK Councilor, first pushed the Head Constable Kanagaraj down and then ran the tractor over him.

She has announced a relief of Rs. 10 lakh and has ordered the police to take strict action against those responsible.
