Chennai's Music Academy granted Research Centre status

Chennai It is the venue of the biggest music and dance concerts in Chennai. The Music Academy, one of the city's oldest landmarks, now boasts of a new distinction. Tumkur University has granted the 84 year old institution the status of a research centre.
 
For over eight decades, the internationally acclaimed organisation has been preserving and promoting Carnatic Music. The Academy has a library with more than 5000 books, 30 publications and digital archives with resources to further digitise close to twenty thousand hours of music to its collection.
 
A few years ago, it started an advanced school of Carnatic music, offering a 3 year diploma course with eminent musicians as faculty members.
 
An elated President of the Academy N Murali has announced that "researchers can enroll here for PhD programmes under the guidance of stalwarts."
