Since April, 250 people have died in Andhra Pradesh because of the heat, according to local officials.
The heat wave in the state this year has seen the maximum temperature hit 49 degrees in areas like the Guntur district. The arrival of the monsoon in Kerala has brought minor relief, lowering the temperature here to 46 degrees in the last two days.
The weather office says heat wave conditions prevailed for about 10 days in the Telangana and coastal belts of the state. Rayalaseema, the third major region in Andhra Pradesh, was spared.
71 people have died in the Vishakhapatnam district, which has been the worst-affected.
Areas like Adilabad and the East Godavari district have also been hit hard with highs of 47 degrees Celsius.
Relief Commissioner T Radha did not deny the alarming death toll. He said he would have to share the details with the chief minister before talking to the media.
