New Delhi: Under mounting pressure to take action against illegal mining and sack the Reddy brothers from his cabinet, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa is busy firefighting in New Delhi.

He met Home Minister P Chidambaram earlier today and briefed him about the situation in the state. He is understood to have countered the Governor's charge that a jungle raj is prevailing in the state.

He also told the Home Minister that there was no need for a CBI probe into the alleged illegal mining in his state as the Lokayukta was already looking into it.

Speaking to reporters after that meeting, Yeddyurappa said he will not hesitate to sack the Reddy brothers if there was any proof against them.

The CM also met the Prime Minister and is planning to meet top BJP leadership as well.

Congress MLAs from Karnataka also met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister today to submit a memorandum on the mining mafia in Karnataka. Their main demand is for a CBI inquiry into the alleged illegal mining in the state.

Meanwhile, speaking to NDTV in Bangalore, Governor HR Bhardwaj, said he would have got the Reddy brothers removed from the cabinet if he had the powers. (Watch: Would sack Reddy brothers if I could: Karnataka Governor)

On Friday, Yeddyurappa called on Governor Bhardwaj and conveyed the government's stand against a CBI inquiry into the illegal mining scam at this stage.

Sticking to his government stand of not referring the illegal mining issue to CBI investigation, Yeddyurappa said he had told the Governor "now it is not proper to entrust the matter to CBI probe. If we do it now, it would further delay the enquiry process."
