The Supreme Court has summoned the police chiefs of Bihar and Chhattisgarh to justify their record on tracking down missing children - the result of a petition filed by Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi's child rights group.
Mr Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last week in recognition of his work for children's rights. He shared the award with Pakistani teen Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for education for girls.
The chief secretaries and heads of police of Bihar and Chhattisgarh - the two states with some of the worst records on child trafficking - have been asked to appear in the Supreme Court on October 30.
Judges said they want chief secretaries and police commissioners to explain "How will they feel if their children go missing".
Research by Mr Satyarthi's Bachpan Bachao Andolan suggests that a child goes missing every six minutes in India and over 100,000 children go missing each year.
