Policeman killed, two security personnel injured in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: A policeman was killed and two other security personnel were injured in an encounter with militants in Pulwama district of south Kashmir today. The encounter comes amid a bandh call by separatists in the Valley in protest against the death of two young men in Army firing on Sunday.

The encounter took place at Tral during a counter-insurgency operation launched by the security forces following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said.

A policemen from the state police and a CRPF jawan sustained injuries in the exchange of fire with the militants, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, protesters have set on fire an Army school in Bandipora which continues to remain tense over the death of the two men.

Shops, schools and offices in Srinagar and the surrounding areas are also closed today as part of the bandh or strike.

A case of murder has been registered against the Army by the police over the firing incident. The Army has begun an inquiry and expressed its regret over the deaths of the two men.

Yesterday, massive protests erupted in Bandipora after the killing of Irfan Nabi, who was in Class 12, and another young man named Tariq Ahmad.
