Devendra Fadnavis' Wife Amruta on the Man Who Will be Chief Minister

My husband should start working from Day 1, says Amruta Ranade Fadnavis.

Mumbai: Maharashtra's chief minister designate Devendra Fadnavis is a "natural leader" with a "depth of knowledge", and he has the "character the corruption ridden state needs," says his wife Amruta Ranade Fadnavis.

"Maharashtra is behind as of now in terms of development," Mrs Fadnavis told NDTV. States that were behind it 15 years ago have overtaken it. "So it would be a tough job to bring it back to its original glory."

But she is happy that the party has entrusted him with the job. "I'm sure he will deliver," she said.

The wife of the man who would run the state, however, has no plans to quit her own job. "Women should be independent and I have worked very hard to reach the position I hold," she said.

An Associate Vice-President with Nagpur's Axis Bank, Mrs Fadnavis has already put in a request for a transfer to Mumbai.

Asked about her husband's strengths, she said, "He has deep knowledge and studies various subjects, especially budget. And he keeps reading and updating himself regularly. All these things will really help. Plus, he has the character required for Maharashtra, which has been corruption-ridden for so many years."

So what's her advice for her husband?

"He should start working from Day 1," Mrs Fadnavis said. "And I will not hesitate to correct him if I think he is making a mistake."

Mr Fadnavis has spent very little time with his family in the last few days. But now that Mrs Fadnavis and her daughter are in Mumbai, the family will be together. Five-year-old daughter Divija has already started writing speeches.

Mrs Fadnavis signed off with an apt song from the 1972 bollywood film 'Piya Ka Ghar' - "Yeh Jeevan Hai, Is Jeevan Ka Yahi Hai - Yahi Hai - Yahi Hai Rangroop."
