Jharkhand Shooter's Husband Arrested; She Says He Posed as Hindu, Then Forced Her to Convert

Tara Sahdev alleges that her husband beat her up when she resisted attempts to convert.

New Delhi: The husband of national champion shooter Tara Sahdev has been arrested near Delhi after she accused him of deceiving her into marriage, forcibly converting her to Islam, and keeping her captive for a month.

Tara, 23, who won the gold medal in the 2009 Eastern Zone championship, said when she married in July in her home state of Jharkand, she believed that her 30-year-old husband was  Ranjeet Singh Kohli.

However, she said during the month of Ramzan, invitation cards to Iftar parties received by her husband addressed him as Rakibul Hussain.

She said her mother-in-law and spouse then forced her to convert, warned her not to share her experience with anybody, and kept her hostage for a month in their home. She claimed that in August, when her husband was away to Delhi, she managed to send SOS text messages to her family who then rescued her.

During interrogation, her husband told police that Tara knew he was a Muslim before they got married and had witnessed him offering namaaz. He claimed that he had a fight with her and beat her earlier this month, and then panicked and disappeared from their home.

The First Information Report or FIR - the first step in the filing of formal charges - accuses her husband of promoting enmity between different religious groups and acts that endanger communal harmony.

Today, demanding an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case, Tara said, "I'm thankful to the police for their work and the way they arrested him. But I know I won't get justice because he has destroyed all the evidence that was against him."

Hussain was produced in a Delhi court today, which gave permission to the Jharkhand police to take him to Ranchi for questioning.
