Pune neck deep in water crisis

Pune:

The depleting levels of water in Pune's dams is causing concern. The city has already imposed 20 per cent water cut, but even that is proving little and now it may even go up to 40 per cent.

"There is little that we could do. Everyone will have to contribute by saving water. We are also advising people not to waste too much water as it's a difficult situation," said Pune Mayor Rajlakhmi Bhosle.

With no rains in the catchment areas the four dams that provide water to the city are fast drying up. And the fear is there is just 16 to 18 days water available for supply to the city.

"What should we do? The tanker is coming after 2.30 pm. At least we should get water to drink," one of the residents on Pune said.

According to the water resource department, the present dry spell in June has never been witnessed in the past 50 years. It's an unprecedented situation forcing the people to now pin their hopes on prayers.
