Police Arrest Main Accused in Murder of Bengal Student Who Took on Liquor Mafia

Sourav had led protests that reportedly forced many liquor dens to shut shop in his locality.

Kolkata: Police have arrested the main accused in the murder of Sourav Chowdhury, a student activist from Bengal who was killed on July 5 for allegedly protesting against liquor and drug dens in his locality of Bamungachi, 30 kilometres away from Kolkata. Shyamal Karmakar, the main accused, was arrested from Rampurhat in Birbhum district yesterday night; he will be produced in court later today.

Sourav had reportedly protested against hooch dens in his neighbourhood that were allegedly run by Karmakar.

The police had already arrested one Anup Talukdar, believed to be a local criminal, in connection with the case.

The 21-year-old student's body was found on the morning of July 5, hacked to pieces, on the railway tracks near his village. (Bengal Student Hacked To Death: Family Demands CBI Probe)

Sourav, a second year student, had led protests that had reportedly forced many liquor dens to shut shop.

His family alleges that he was called out of his house by a group of people led by Shyamal Karmakar late on Friday night. When the family could not find him for hours, they went to the police. (Student's Killing: Minister Taunts Family for CBI Probe Demand)

"I saw a few people dragging my brother away. They were Shyamal and 3-4 other people, there was Anup. We searched for him everywhere, along with the police, but could not find him. In the morning someone asked us to go to the railway tracks, we found my brother's body there," Sourav's brother Sandip had said.
