Odisha teacher, set on fire for sexual harassment complaint, dies of injuries

Bhubaneswar: A teacher from a government school in Odisha, who was set on fire on Sunday night allegedly for refusing to withdraw a sexual assault complaint against an education department official, died at a hospital in Visakhapatnam today.

The 28-year-old was set ablaze by an unidentified man while she was watching television with some children at a residential school in Rayagada district, nearly 420 km from capital Bhubaneswar.

According to the police, before pouring kerosene on the woman, the assailant had threatened her to withdraw her complaint against sub-inspector of schools Netrananda Dandsena.
The victim sustained over 90 percent burns and was rushed to a hospital in Visakhapatnam.

Police say she had filed a molestation complaint against Dandsena in July. The accused, who was absconding since then, was arrested from Seshakhal on Odisha Andhra Pradesh border on Wednesday.

In October, a committee against sexual harassment at work found Dandsena guilty and recommended action against him. Following the order, the district administration had suspended him.
