NDTV Impact: Rejected by Dozens of Schools for Being Different, He Finally Finds One That Accepts Him

Deepali D'mello's 17-year-old son Rahul D'Mello had been rejected by at least a dozen schools.

New Delhi: Last week, NDTV had chronicled the struggle faced by children with special needs and their parents, who are repeatedly rejected by mainstream schools.

Rahul D'Mello, 17, was rejected by at least a dozen schools in spite of securing 57 per cent in his class 10 exams without the help of a scribe.

After NDTV reported on the schools' refusal to admit Rahul, he has got admission in a premier school in Gurgaon.

Talking about the family's struggles, his mother Deepali had earlier told NDTV, "No school wants our autistic son just because he has some learning disabilities. We have been to 8 to 9 schools in the last one month. He has been turned down so many times".

The school that Rahul had earlier studied in had failed him twice in class 9, but was forced to promote him to class 10 after the board re-examined the papers.

The family now hopes that their story will send a positive message to others as well.

Under the Right to Education Act, neither a private nor a government school can turn down a student on the grounds of a disability.

Deepali's mother Sheila Mathur, almost in tears, told NDTV, "After years of struggle, our prayers have been answered".

Rahul's sister Raina admitted, "All I wanted was to see was my brother in a (school) uniform."
