The Action Taken Report tabled by the government along with the Liberhan Report does not recommend punitive action against those it finds guilty of the Babri Masjid demolition, but the Law Minister says expect follow-up action.
The Liberhan Report indicts 68 people of "leading the country to the brink of communal discord", among them former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and LK Advani.
Speaking to NDTV, Law Minister Veerappa Moily said, "The final indictment of BJP and Sangh Parivaar leaders is shocking and shameful for the nation."
Moily said to NDTV, "Normally when a commission report is given, then follow-up action is taken. But taking steps on a very important report like this will have to be a topmost priority. Each ministry will have to work on it."
When asked, "What happens to the big fish? Will criminal action be taken against them?" Moily said " It is not only a crime against an individual but a nation".
Moily added that while the Liberhan Report gives a clean chit to the Narasimha Rao government at the time, "the demolition of Babri was an attempt to destroy the secular & national fabric of the nation. Whoever contributed will have to share it."
