Lakhimpur Kheri:
A police post was set on fire in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh after violence over alleged custodial death of Ranjit Maurya, who was arrested for allegedly harassing a girl.
Ranjit's body was found hanging in the barracks of Dhakerwa police post. A large crowd gathered at the place; it set police vehicles on fire and set the post on fire.
Reports say police resorted to aerial fire to disperse the mob.
The police post falls under Nighasan police station where a minor girl's body was found hanging from a tree in June this year. The attempted rape and murder of the teenager inside the police compound had sparked massive outrage. That was the beginning of the spate of crime against women that followed, something that doesn't seem to stop.
