He was just a young schoolboy who was running late for school. When 15-year-old Afzal Ahmed Fayaz told his teachers that he was unwell, they didn't think he should be excused from punishment.
The teachers of this private school in Uttara Kannada made him run repeatedly around the school grounds. Then he keeled over. He died before he could be moved to the local hospital.
The headmaster of the school and another teacher have been arrested.
"They said rules are rules... and they made him run around the ground 3 times," says a relative of the teenager.
Doctors are waiting for Afzal's post-mortem report to determine what killed him. The government has ordered an inquiry and has decided that Afzal's family will receive financial compensation from both the government and the school.
