India Will Give Fitting Reply To Pakistan, Says Amit Shah in Jammu and Kashmir

BJP president Amit Shah addressing a rally in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir

Kathua, Jammu: BJP president Amit Shah today said the Narendra Modi government and the Indian army will give a "befitting reply" to shelling from Pakistan along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Home Minister Rajnath Singh has clearly said that if Pakistan resorts to firing, we will definitely give a befitting reply to them," Mr Shah said, addressing a rally in Kathua in Jammu on his first visit to the state since becoming BJP chief last month.

Mr Shah had earlier visited two camps for villagers driven out of their homes near the border because of the spurt in firing from Pakistan in the past weeks.

"It was (Chief Minister) Omar Abdullah's duty to meet people displaced due to the Pakistani firing. Why didn't he meet affected people rather than add insult to injury?" the BJP leader said, targeting the state's National Conference government.

It was time to "end dynastic politics" in the state, he added, in a sharp attack on the Chief Minister and his father Farooq Abdullah, the top leaders of the state's ruling party.

Responding to Mr Shah's barbs, Omar Abdullah said in the assembly, "We can't do anything with cross border shelling. That's something for the government of India to see how they will respond to that. But saying that we are not doing anything for those who are affected would be wrong."

The BJP chief is in the state chasing "Mission 44+" - or his goal of winning at least 44 of Jammu and Kashmir's 87 seats - or an absolute majority - in upcoming assembly elections.

The party's best tally so far has been just 11 seats in the 2008 state polls. But the national election, in which the Modi-led BJP scored a dream victory, has apparently energized party workers who believe their good fortune will extend to the state polls. The BJP won three of Jammu and Kashmir's six Lok Sabha seats while the National Conference scored a duck.
