Amethi:
Rahul Gandhi's two-day visit to his constituency Amethi was marked by protests on both days. First it was college girls and then villagers who wanted him to leave Amethi.
On Thursday, students from a local women's college blocked the road that Mr Gandhi was taking to inaugurate a bank branch. They also showed black flags to protest the poor facilities in their college. Mr Gandhi's vehicle and security escort had to be diverted to another route.
On the second day, he faced angry villagers from Chachkapur who gathered outside Mr Gandhi's guest house on Friday morning and shouted slogans, asking him to leave Amethi. To calm the protestors, he was forced to invite them for talks.
Though Amethi and neighbouring Rae Bareli, represented by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, have been in the family for decades, this assembly election results were dismal for the party. In Rae Bareli, the Congress won none of the assembly segments and in Amethi, it could manage only two of the five. Despite Mr Gandhi's active and sustained campaign, the Congress did much worse than expected in the Assembly elections earlier this year.
Mr Gandhi is in Amethi to meet party workers and attend a district monitoring and vigilance committee meeting at the collectorate, party sources said.
