Highest gallantry award for Army doctor

New Delhi: An Army doctor Major Laishram Jyotin Singh was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award, for his bravery while fighting militants during an attack on Indians in Kabul. (Read: Who is Major Laishram Jyotin Singh?)

He is the first Army doctor to receive the Ashok Chakra.

His sister was moved to tears while remembering his valiant effort.

"I feel proud of my brother but I am very sorry...I can't even express...he saved many lives....we miss you," said Dr Meena Kumari Devi, his sister.                  
 
A son, a brother a braveheart Major Laishram Jyotin Singh a doctor with the Indian Army was posted in Kabul when the Indian embassy was attacked in 2010. As the suicide bomber broke through the security barricades firing at people, an unarmed Maj Singh charged at the terrorist and pinned him down.

The bomber detonated his suicide vest. Five people died in the attack including the Major.

Singh's courage to take on the terrorist saved many lives.

He is the first doctor to posthumously receive the country's highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra.

The 37 year old was to have married this year.

His family gathered around his ailing father to remember this incredible man.
