Heavy Rain Claims 19 Lives in Uttarakhand

The MeT department has predicted more rain in the state in the next two days

Nineteen people have been killed in the last 24 hours in landslides and incidents of house collapse as heavy rain continued in the hill state of Uttarakhand on Saturday.

While 14 people have been killed in Yamkeshwar, Pauri and Lansdowne Tehsils of Pauri district, 2 people have reportedly been swept away in Dehradun. One death has been reported in Pithoragarh.

The downpour has caused all rivers including the Ganges river in Haridwar to swell and flow over the danger limit. Due to impending landslides, the Chardham pilgrimage has been currently suspended.

There is more worry for the hill state as the MeT department has predicted more rain in the next 48 hours. The state government has issued additional flood alerts to all villages situated beside teeming rivers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted offering condolences to families of the deceased.
