Kolkata: It's what Mamata Banerjee has been demanding. Sources say the West Bengal government has agreed to a CBI investigation into last week's train accident in which close to 150 people were killed in Midnapore when a train headed to Mumbai derailed. (

Banerjee, who is the Railways Minister, had blamed a "political conspiracy" for the accident, even as the state's Left government, the police, and Home Minister P Chidambaram said that signs suggested this was an attack by Naxals.
The state government had, earlier this week, rejected the need for a CBI inquiry, stating that its own investigation was making good progress.
However, the Bengal government appears to have changed its mind. The CBI will now head a joint investigation team that will include representatives of the West Bengal police and the railway police.
