Darjeeling: 
Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) president and Gorkhaland proponent, Madan Tamang, has died after being attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in Darjeeling town.
Tamang was preparing for a public meeting when he was allegedly attacked by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters. Police had to fire in the air to disperse the mob.
Tamang recently opposed GJM's stand on an interim set-up for Darjeeling hills and demanded Gorkhaland instead.
GJM has been opposed to ABGL since it sees itself as the sole representative of the Gorkhaland demand.
Darjeeling is tense after the attack and all shops and markets have been closed down.
Who is Madan Tamang?Madan Tamang was a senior leader of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League.
Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League is a 41-year-old
organization which has a strong following among ex-servicemen in
Darjeeling.
Of late, many members of the ABGL had switched over
to Gorkha Janamukti Morcha.
Gorkha Janamukti Morcha has
been opposed to ABGL since it sees itself as the sole representative of
the Gorkhaland demand.
