Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh: Doctors in the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur who had been boycotting work, after a junior doctor was assaulted by the relatives of a boy, have now called off their strike. The boy died soon after he was admitted on Tuesday. 150 doctors who were striking work had said they would only return to treat patients, once adequate security is deployed in the hospital to prevent future harassment by relatives of patients.

The medical college is the main hospital that houses the maximum number of children suffering from Japanese Encephalitis.

The strike had serious consequences for more than 2,000 children being treated for acute Japanese Encephalitis syndrome. Japanese encephalitis is a killer disease that has already claimed the lives of more than 500 children this year.
