Four-Year-old Locked up in Dog Cage by Teacher As 'Punishment'

A school principal has been arrested in Thiruvanathapuram after a student was locked up in a dog cage

Thiruvananthapuram: A four-year-old child was locked up in a dog cage by his teacher at a private school in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly as punishment for talking in class.

The incident took place on Thursday at Jawahar English Medium School, which runs from the home of its principal, Sasikala. She has been arrested.

The teacher, Deepika, will also be arrested soon, say the police. She allegedly pushed the child into the cage after releasing a dog that is kept in it.

The little boy was spotted by his older sister, who is also a student at the school. When she went to complain to the principal, she was allegedly warned of punishment if she told her parents.

The incident finally came out when brother and sister refused to go to school. On learning the reason, their family went to the police.

"We will take stern action against the management," said a senior Education Department official.

The child has revealed that his teachers often subjected children to corporeal punishment.

The police say the school is not registered with the state government and has not been following rules. It runs classes till the seventh grade.

Shocked by the incident, parents protested on Monday at the school until the police came and took the principal for questioning.
