Srinagar: National Conference President and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday dismissed speculation of him becoming chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir again after his son Omar Abdullah dramatically resigned saying it is "not true".

Farooq also said Omar had no option but to quit under the given circumstances following the kind of allegations leveled by the opposition PDP against him.

"No. I don't think so. That's not true," said Farooq who was with Omar at their residence after he announced his resignation when asked to respond to speculation of him taking over as chief minister.

Farooq who was on his way to airport rushed back home following Omar's announcement.

Asked what he was going to do following the dramatic development, Farooq said cryptically, "nothing."

"Why should I do anything. It is for the Governor to decide. The matter is with the Governor," he said.

The former J&K chief minister said he thought Omar felt that his honour was at stake.

"I think man is known by the honour he has. I think he (Omar) felt that his honour was at stake and he cannot lead the state while charges, baseless charges has been leveled against him. I think under the circumstances he has no other option but to do this," Farooq said defending Omar's decision.

Farooq also slammed the PDP saying it had nothing else to do. "PDP is but a tragedy for the state and tragedy for the country," he added.
