'Didn't Step Out of House for Months,' Says UP Woman Raped Allegedly by Uber Driver

Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav allegedly raped a woman in UP's Mainpuri last year

Mainpuri: A woman in Uttar Pradesh who was raped allegedly by Shiv Kumar Yadav - the Uber driver who was arrested for the same crime last week - says she was so scared that she did not "step out of her house for months" after the incident.

Recounting the horror, the 32-year-old, who is married and stays in a village next to Yadav's in the Mainpuri district, said she had gone to dump garbage near a field when he allegedly raped her in August last year.

"When I shouted, he tried to strangle me which made me dizzy. He threatened to kill me if I made a noise," the woman said. As she tried to hold Yadav's collar, he allegedly hit her hard and she fell down.

The incident, she claims, sparked a sense of fear among women in the village.

Yadav was arrested but was later given bail in the case, the trial for which is on.

The 32-year-old Uber driver, who was arrested from his village on charges of raping a 27-year-old woman passenger in Delhi last week, has, according to records, a disturbing pattern of assaulting women.

In 2011, he spent seven months in a jail in Delhi for allegedly raping a woman who worked at a pub in Gurgaon. Police say he was acquitted in that case, but is unclear on how.

Yadav also got bail in other cases including one that charged him with illegal possession of a gun.
