The latest satellite cloud imageries received by the Met office in Chennai indicate that the cyclonic storm 'MAHASEN' is about 850 km southeast of Chennai in the Bay of Bengal.
"It would move initially northwest-wards during the 36 hours from 7 pm today and recurve thereafter northeast-wards towards Bangaladesh-Myanmar coast," met officials said on Sunday.
The forecast for the 36-hours predicts that rain or thundershowers would occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh and south interior Karnataka.
Isolated rain or thundershowers may occur over Kerala, Rayalaseema, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep, while dry weather would prevail over Telangana and north interior Karnataka.
As for Chennai city, sky conditions would be partly cloudy with rain or thundershowers may occur in some areas.
Due to this, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall would occur over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during next 48 hours, they said.
Met office also advised the fishermen of Andaman and Nicobar Islands not to venture into the sea during the next 48 hours.
