Couldn't police wait till morning for crackdown? Supreme Court on Ramdev camp
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today asked the Delhi Police to explain the use of force on the followers of Baba Ramdev at the Ramlila grounds on June 4 when the yoga guru was on fast against corruption.

The court asked the Delhi Police, "Explain whether the use of force was justified? What were the circumstance which led to the action and why the police could not wait till the morning to ask the people to leave the venue?"

Baba Ramdev's counsel Ram Jethmalani attacked the Home Minister by saying Mr Chidambaram tried to crush the rights of the ordinary people to protest peacefully. He told the court, "Are we living under dictatorship or a Nazi rule that Baba Ramdev shall not be allowed to carry out his protest and will not be allowed to stay in Delhi?"

The court has asked Delhi Police to file its reply by Friday.

The Supreme Court is hearing a suo-moto petition on the alleged police violence against Baba Ramdev and his followers at the Ramlila Ground. One of his followers had died in the incident.
