Birbhum Clashes: Congress Team Stopped From Entering Violence-Hit Village

Congress supporters prevented from entering Makra village in West Bengal's Birbhum district.

Birbhum: A Congress team led by West Bengal party chief Adhir Chowdhury was today prevented from entering Makra village in Birbhum district where prohibitory orders are in place.

On Monday three people were killed in the village in a gun-battle between supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP. Channels showed scores of armed assailants running through paddy fields and firing country-made guns indiscriminately. Several people also suffered bullet injuries.

Makra is still mourning the deaths, and there is considerable tension in the area. Section 144 has also been imposed, which disallows the assembly of more than four persons.

On Thursday, three BJP parliamentarians from Delhi - including party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi - were arrested by the West Bengal police to prevent them from visiting Birbhum's Makra village.
