AIDS patient locked by family in home

Sangli: The Maharashtra government's statistical data states that it is trying to educate the masses regarding HIV and AIDS. However, ground realities tell a different tale, as a shocking story of neglect and abuse in Sangli in southern Maharashtra proves.

A 34-year-old mother of two has been locked in a shack for 10 days by her own family after they discovered that she was HIV positive. The family told villagers that she was mentally unstable. However, neighbours, who feed the woman and care for her, disagree.

",She answers questions properly. I don't believe she is mad,", said Nagesh Mali, a neighbour.

After her husband died seven years ago, she was abandoned by his family. And now her own family locked her up in a shed on the side of a farm.

The police rescued her after the news spread. She has now been admitted to a government hospital.

",This is a violation of human rights and fundamental rights of freedom,", said Krishna Prasad Yadav, Superintendent of Police, Sangli.

A case has been registered against the brother Devanand Shankar for wrongful confinement. No one from the family was available for comment.
