Kaziranga National Park, Assam: After getting stuck in a slush pit formed after the recent floods a female rhino has died at Assam's Kaziranga National Park.

Officials at the park say she had been in severe pain for over 72 hours.

According to local wildlife activists, the rhino got stuck in mud after she was involved in a fight with some male rhinos.

The fight left her back paralysed and she was stuck at the spot getting more and more entrenched in the mud.

While rhinos are occasionally caught in the slushy grounds of the park, they mostly manage to come out.

Medical and rescue teams were rushed from Guwahati, but in spite of their best efforts, the rhino could not be rescued.

The incident happened in the park's central range, in the interiors of the park where there are no motorable roads.

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar also visited the park over the weekend, promising greater help to the park to curb poaching incidents.

Reports said 22 rhinos at Kaziranga have been poached this year.
