A troubled tenure for Omar Abdullah

New Delhi:

Even by the standards of insurgency hit Kashmir, Omar Abdullah's had a torrid time in the months since he was sworn in as Chief Minister.

First was his handling of the Shopian case - the rape and murder of two women in May and the alleged subsequent cover-up by the local police set the Valley ablaze, forcing Omar to change his stand.

Barely had the protests died down when the killing of four protesters by the CRPF in Baramulla again brought people out on the streets.

This time Omar was more decisive taking the CRPF off policing duties. The first time ever such an action has been initiated in the Valley.

And then suddenly, on Tuesday morning, the PDP's allegation claiming the Chief Minister is an accused in a sex scandal. And this led an emotional Omar to promptly announce his decision to quit.

"These charges are false. But this is a blot I cannot wipe away. I will resign as CM of Kashmir," he said on Tuesday.

While some welcomed the facebooking, twittering chief minister, others questioned his experience.

But being one of the youngest chief ministers of the country of one of its most troubled states was perhaps never going to be easy.
