A Desperate Gujarat Prays for Rain

Staring at the possibility of a drought, the farmers are now turning to prayers to appease the rain Gods.

Ahmedabad: Having received only four per cent of the season's rainfall so far, it is a desperate situation for farmers in Gujarat. Seed sowing is already delayed, and if it does not rain for another week, the situation could turn into a complete nightmare.

Staring at the possibility of a drought, the farmers are now turning to prayers to appease the rain Gods.

The state government admits that the situation is turning increasingly critical and that their priority is to provide drinking water for farmers and their cattle.

"We have to take care of drinking water, fodder for the cattle...also irrigation for whatever sowing has been carried out. The dams which still have waters...that is being reserved for drinking purpose as of now," said Gujarat Government Spokesperson Nitin Patel.

Though the met department has predicted rains in the next few days, on the ground, the situation is worsening.

93 out of the 155 talukas in the state haven't received any rainfall and sowing activity is on in only about 15 per cent of the farms across the state.

For those who have already carried out sowing, further delay could spell disaster.

Jayram Thakore, a villager in North Gujarat who has sown cotton, is a worried man. Having spent more than Rs 40,000 on sowing, time is running out for him.

"If it does not rain now, my cotton seeds which I have sown will be destroyed," said Mr Thakore.

For farmers like Thakore, hope is the only thing they can cling onto.
