Sultanpur: Seeking to strike an emotional chord with the people, BJP leader Varun Gandhi today recalled his father late Sanjay Gandhi's long association with the area and said he had come to establish a new relation of trust with them and not just for votes.

Varun, an MP from Pilibhit, asked the electorate to realise the value of their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and not just fritter away their ballots.

The BJP national general secretary, who is tipped to be fielded in the constituency, addressed a series of 'nukkad' meetings in Kadipur Assembly segment and asked people to elect someone who could remain with them for the next five years and ensure that the works were completed.

Sanjay Gandhi had started his political career in 1970s from Sultanpur and won his first election from Amethi, which was a part of the district at that time.

Varun, who is presently on a five-day visit in Sultanpur, raised a question mark on the working style of MPs, MLAs and officials and stressed that only 30 per cent of the funds were utilised on public schemes.

Stressing that there was a need for a system under which people got proper representation in power and decision making, he termed lack of trust as the biggest challenge emerging in politics.

The BJP leader asked the people to rise above caste and religion and select a candidate who could ensure development.
