163 nominations filed for fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal

Kolkata: Altogether 163 candidates have so far filed nomination papers for the fifth and final phase
of Lok Sabha election in West Bengal on May 12, Election Commission officials said in Kolkata today.

The 17 Lok Sabha constituencies that will go to the poll in the fifth phase are Behrampore, Krishnagar, Ranaghat, Bongaon, Barrackpore, Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar,
Mathurapur, Diamond Harbour, Jadavpur, Kolkata (South), Kolkata (North), Tamluk, Contai and Ghatal.

"With another day left for filing of nominations in this phase, 15 candidates have submitted their papers from Kolkata (North) and 13 each from Barrackpore and Diamond Harbour," OSD in the CEO's office Amit Roy Chowdhury said.

"Eleven candidates each have filed papers from Bongaon, Jadavpur and Kolkata (South) followed by 10 each from Krishnagar and Jaynagar, nine each from Barasat, Basirhat and
Ghatal, eight each from Ranaghat, Dum Dum and Mathurapur, seven from Baharampore, six from Tamluk and five from Contai," he said.

Meanwhile, a total of 72 candidates remained in fray after the withdrawal of nomination papers for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha election in the state scheduled for May 7, Roy Chowdhury said.

Six Lok Sabha constituencies going to the poll in the fourth phase are Jhargram, Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, Bishnupur and Asansol.

"At the end of withdrawal of nomination papers in this phase today, 14 candidates each were in fray from Bankura and Asansol, followed by 13 from Jhargram, 12 from Purulia, ten from Midnapore and nine from Bishnupur parliamentary constituencies," he said.

Only three candidates, two from Midnapore and one from Bankura parliamentary constituency, have withdrawn their nominations during the last day of withdrawal today
