US Congresswoman Calls for Senate Confirmation of Vivek Murthy

US Congresswoman Calls for Senate Confirmation of Vivek Murthy
Washington: A Democratic Congresswoman from New York has asked the Senate to confirm Indian-American Dr Vivek Murthy as the Surgeon General of the US.

"It was an honour to meet with Dr Murthy and hear about his vision for addressing the health needs of Americans. He is an outstanding nominee and I urge the Senate to confirm him," Congresswoman Grace Meng said.

If confirmed, Dr Murthy would be the first ever Indian American to occupy the top health official job in the country.

Nominated by US President Barack Obama several months ago, his confirmation is being held in the Senate because of opposition from a section of the Senators under the influence of the powerful gun lobby.

The White House said that Obama will not withdraw his nomination.

Meng met with Murthy as part of a meeting he held with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).
