New Delhi: India has taken up with Qatar the killing of an Indian fisherman and detention of three others while they were fishing in that country's waters.

Karthikeyan (32) from Tirupalikdi village in Ramanthapuram district of Tamil Nadu was shot dead while his three friends were arrested by the naval personnel on Monday night, according to a police officer in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram area.

The Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said the deceased fisherman was residing in Bahrain and Indian mission in Qatar and Bahrain have been in touch with authorities in both the countries.

"It is understood that he has died. However, the three other Indian fisherman who were with him are now understood to be in custody of Qatari authorities. Our mission in Qatar has taken this up and we are ascertaining the details. Also, we have requested for release of the three fishermen while the Qatari authorities investigate the cause of the death and come back to us," the Spokesperson said.

He said the Indian mission in Bahrain has been working with the sponsor of the fisherman to make arrangement for return of the mortal remains.

"We will continue to pursue this matter both in Qatar and Bahrain," the Spokesperson said.

The four had gone to Bahrain in February for fishing on contract basis.
