Yamuna swelling by the hour, Delhi on alert

New Delhi: The Yamuna continues to rise in Delhi but at least for now there's no need to panic. The Yamuna has been on the rise after 8 lakh cusec of water was released from the Hatnikund barrage upstream in Haryana.

It crossed the danger mark on Thursday afternoon and now it's flowing close to 2 metres above the danger mark.

But the Delhi government says there's no need to panic as additional boats and pumps have been put into action and all low lying areas facing the danger of flooding have already been evacuated.

"There is no need to worry. We are taking all precautionary measures to deal with any eventuality. The situation is under control," said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The National Disaster Management Authority ( NDMA) is on standby.

Senior officials of Flood Control Department said the water level is likely to swell further and may reach 206.65 metres by Saturday as Haryana released nearly one lakh cusec water on Friday.

Over 100 personnel from National Disaster Response Force, have been deployed to assist the local authorities.

Meanwhile, the Old Yamuna Bridge, connecting east Delhi with the heart of the national capital, was shut for rail and road traffic after the water level in the river rose. The road as well as rail movement was closed following the rise in water level to 205.88 metres at 3 pm on Friday.
