Pune: A 23-year-old woman from Phursungi allegedly set ablaze her husband and later tried to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills at Bhekarai Nagar in Hadapsar on Tuesday.

The Uruli Devachi police said the couple is undergoing treatment at a city hospital.

The man, Rajendra Jagtap (27), is a software professional at a Magarpatta firm, while his wife Ms Varsharani is a homemaker. Ms Varsharani alleged that Mr Rajendra harassed her mentally and physically. He also reportedly forced her to get Rs 2 lakh from her parents.

"They had a heated argument in the wee hours of Tuesday. Later, when Rajendra was fast asleep, Ms Varsharani poured kerosene on him and set him on fire. Later, she consumed sleeping pills," said Assistant Police Inspector (API) Narayan Pawar.

Alarmed by the smoke and muffled screams of the couple, neighbours broke open the window and doused the fire. They rushed them to a hospital.

While Mr Rajendra was booked for torturing his wife, the police filed a case of attempt to murder against Ms Varsharani.
