Salem (Tamil Nadu): A 32-year old woman was arrested on Saturday after she allegedly poured hot oil over her husband while he was asleep in their house in the district, suspecting infidelity, police said.

Periyasamy (35) suffered 70 per cent burns and was admitted to a local government hospital where his condition was stated to be serious, Mecheri police inspector Sureshkumar said.

His wife Chitra was arrested on the charge of attempt to murder, Sureshkumar said.

The couple had been married for the last ten years and had two sons and as many daughters, he said.

The two had been quarrelling of late as Chitra suspected that her husband was having an illicit affair.

When Periyasamy was sleeping in their house on Friday night, Chitra poured hot oil on him, Sureshkumar said. Hearing his cries for help, neighbours rushed him to the hospital, he said.
