UP shocker: Woman gangraped, set ablaze; 1 arrested

Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district, a 24-year-old woman is battling for her life after she threatened to expose those who kidnapped and raped her.

The victim, from the Shivpuri village of the district, had gone to a local market on Saturday when four men first waylaid and then gangraped her. After she threatened to go to the police, they poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze on Sunday.

"Majid and Naim caught me and took me to their room in their house. They kept me there all night, then in the morning at 5 am, they set me on fire and ran off... they set me on fire because I was going to expose the truth... they were asking me to leave, but I didn't go... there were four people, and they raped me," she said.

Majid was arrested today while the other three accused are still on the run, police said.

The woman, who suffered over 75 per cent burn injuries, is admitted to a government hospital and her condition is said to be critical.

"I did try to beat up the men, but I got caught, and they managed to escape into another house. I locked that house. A complaint has been given to the police," said the victim's brother.

"On the basis of her family's request, we have registered a complaint. We have talked to CMO and other related officials regarding her medical care. Her treatment is going on. As per the doctors' opinions, we will deal with this situation," said a police officer.
