Three killed as trailer rams into car

Mumbai: As many as three people were killed after a trailer rammed into a car on the busy Mumbai-Pune highway this afternoon, police said.

The incident took place around 2 pm when an Alto car carrying four men had stopped at a toll booth to pay money, just when the trailer crashed into it at high speed, causing the smaller vehicle to hit the road divider.

Those sitting inside the car were injured and immediately taken to a nearby hospital. However, three of them were declared brought-dead, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Divakar Salvi, Sunil Mhatre, Balchandra Mhatre. One Vijendra Jumledar has sustained serious injuries in the accident, police said.

The driver of the trailer has been identified as Sher Ali Rehman, who also sustained fractures. He has claimed the brakes of his vehicle had failed to function properly leading to the accident.

Ali would be arrested after he was discharged from the hospital, police added.
