Thane: One dead, nine injured in local train accident

The derailment was caused by the uncoupling of a rake between the Titwala and Ambivali stations.

Thane: A local train on Mumbai's suburban network derailed this afternoon near Titwala in Thane district, leaving one dead, and nine injured.

The derailment was caused by the uncoupling of a rake between the Titwala and Ambivali stations, when the  Kasara-CST local was travelling towards Mumbai.

The  Kasara-CST local connects Nasik and Nagpur as well as northbound routes from Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus. With peak hour traffic in the opposite direction, the stoppage of service did not cause much inconvenience to commuters.

25-year-old Dhawal Mayur Lodha died on the spot. Of the nine injured, five are in a critical condition. The injured have been admitted to Fortis Hospital and the Railway Hospital in Kalyan.

Meanwhile, the Railways have announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of the dead, Rs 15,000 to the grievously injured and Rs 5,000 for those who sustained minor injuries.
