Teen stabbed allegedly for taking on eve-teasers

Mumbai: In Mumbai, five people have been arrested, four of them minors, for stabbing a 19-year-old to death in full public view.

On Monday evening, 19-year-old Santosh Vichivora, a resident Dombivli's Navneet Nagar, was walking down from a bus stop to his house after finishing work. He was accompanied by a girl who stays in the same housing complex. According to the girl, she was exchanging cell phone numbers with Santosh - the accused saw that and started teasing Santosh, which led to an argument.

The girl denies she was harassed by the attackers, but the cops have also booked the accused for outraging a woman's modesty.

"No one teased me and I am not under pressure to say this. He was giving me his new number and the boys teased him. He asked me walk ahead. A fight broke out and I came running inside when I saw him being attacked," she said.

The incident, however, is a dark reminder of the Keenan and Reuben case, who too were killed in similar circumstances last October. Then, Mumbai stood and watched. Now, Dombivli did the same.

"There were people there who just stood and watched. No one helped," the girl accompanying Santosh said.

There was one exception though. 50-year-old Jayantilal Gada saw what was happening and tried to break up the fight.

"We came running to help when we heard what was going on. I am still shocked that a person who I tried to save died," said Mr Gada.

For Santosh's mother Vimla Vichivara, the trauma is unbearable. "Strict punishment should be given to the culprit who committed the crime," she said.

Santosh used to work at a marble store. His father had died two years ago. He is survived by his mother, who is herself battling with cancer, and two younger siblings.
