Teen domestic help's torture: employer's bail hearing tomorrow, mother to visit girl in hospital

The girl was tortured by her employers for a year.

New Delhi: A Delhi court will hear the bail application of Vandana Dhir, arrested for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl from Jharkhand working as a domestic help in her house.

The domestic help, found with wound marks over her body and part of her skull fractured, was employed by the 50-year-old executive of a multinational company and her 85-year-old mother at a house in the upmarket Vasant Kunj area.

A joint team of an NGO called Shakti Vahini and the Delhi Police that rescued the girl on September 30 found her lying on the floor, semi-naked, with wounds to her head and gashes all over her body.

The girl had reportedly told the police that she had been working with Ms Dhir for the past one year without getting any remuneration. She also alleged that she was beaten up almost every day.

The lawyer of accused Vandana Dhir, who is in judicial custody till October 15, had claimed on Wednesday in the court that the teenage girl was mentally unstable.

According to court sources, the bone test to ascertain the age of the girl has been conducted and the report is expected tomorrow.

Ms Dhir was arrested on October 1 after the police filed a case under various sections of the IPC and under the provisions of the Bonded Labour Act. Sources say the police have also decided to add sections of the stringent Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act in the case, which provides for a minimum six months to five years in jail.

Meanwhile, the girl's mother is reaching Delhi from Jharkhand tomorrow to visit her daughter who is being treated at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital.
