Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu: A memorial for Tamil victims of the 2009 Eelam war in Sri Lanka was unveiled in Thanjavur today by World Tamil Confederation President and noted pro-Tamil leader Pazha Nedumaran.

The memorial "Mullaivaikkal Ninaivu Mutram" was originally scheduled to be unveiled on November 8.

However, it was advanced following a direction from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to the police to allow the function.

The memorial was built on a 1.75 acre site at Vilar village on the Thanjavur-Trichy highway. It has sculptures and portraits depicting the sufferings of the Tamil victims of Eelam war. Photographs of Tamil savants also adorn the memorial.

"The memorial was named after "Mullaivaikkal" [a town in Sri Lanka] as homage to 1.5 lakh Tamils who were killed there in the war," Nedumaran said.

Meanwhile, road and rail blockades continued in Tamil Nadu today by several outfits demanding that India should not participate in the CHOGM scheduled in Sri Lanka this month.
