Suspected criminal killed in Delhi highway shootout

New Delhi: A suspected criminal was killed in daylight shootout between a police team and five men on a national highway in the outskirts of Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The other four, including one bearing a reward on his head, were arrested.

"Five armed men in a Maruti Ritz car opened fire at a team of Delhi Police's Crime Branch officials in the Alipur area after they were asked to stop," said a police officer.

Police retaliated and managed to apprehend the criminals in a few minutes.

"One criminal identified as Rakesh died, while the other four have been arrested," Additional Commissioner of Police Ravinder Yadav told.

Among those arrested was Manoj Morkheri, a resident of Haryana's Rohtak, having a reward of Rs.1 lakh on his head and wanted in various cases of abduction for ransom, extortion, attempt to murder in Delhi and Haryana, the officer said.

The operation was conducted on secret information received by the police team.
