Six injured in Mumbai train collision, no casualties reported

MumbaiAt least six passengers were injured, three seriously, when two suburban local trains suddenly came opposite each other at Mumbai's Andheri station last night and collided. However, there were no casualties in the mishap.

The incident occurred at around 11.15 pm when a Churchgate-Borivli and a Virar-Churchgate train collided near one of the platforms of Andheri railway station.

The incident, however, triggering a mini riot, officials said on Sunday. Thousands of angry commuters vented their ire by resorting to minor stone-pelting in Andheri, compelling the Government Railway Police to evict them from the trains and the railway platforms.

Though some television reports claimed that at least two bogies of one of the suburban trains derailed, Western Railway officials refused to confirm or deny the same.

The incident disrupted rail services, stranding hundreds of commuters. Preliminary reports indicate the accident occurred due to signal or track failure.
