She jumped off 15th floor after husband's birthday dinner
Mumbai: A housewife committed suicide by jumping from the 15th floor of an Andheri building in the wee hours of yesterday. The police said that while the woman's family was asleep, she came out of her flat and jumped into the duct between the building's elevators. MIDC police have registered a case of suicide and suspect depression may have driven her to take the extreme step.

The deceased, identified as Usha Rao lived with her husband Nagesh (60) on the 15th floor of Kalpataru Estate in Andheri (E). Nagesh owns a pathology lab in Bandra (W). Police said that Usha was suffering from depression and was on medication. Usha stayed at home while her husband was at work. She would often go to her relative's house, and sometimes visit her hometown in Bangalore to spend time with family, a source said.

The couple have two children, who live in the United States; a daughter who is studying, and a son who works with a private firm. Both children were on a visit to Mumbai for the past two days to celebrate their father's birthday, and were due to return to the US yesterday evening.

The police said that on Wednesday night, the family had a get-together and spent time together. At around 1 am, they all retired to their rooms to sleep. Sometime during the early part of the morning, Usha is believed to have got up and left her flat. She climbed through the sliding windows and jumped into the duct between the elevators, and landed 15 floors below. Her body was discovered early in morning. At around 6 am, Nagesh got up for his morning walk and did not find his wife next to him. He went out to check, and saw people gathered around his wife's body below the duct. MIDC police reached the spot and started an investigation.

PSI Sanjay Sagvekar said, "When we reached, the woman had already died. We took her to Cooper Hospital and a post- mortem was carried out. She sustained injuries to her head and other parts of her body. We have handed the body to family members."

Senior Police Inspector Suresh Hujband of MIDC police station said, "A case of suicide has been registered. No suicide note was found. The woman was suffering from depression, for which she was under medication. Further investigation is on."
