Police officer, allegedly drunk, tries to shoot doctor in hospital

A grab from CCTV footage shows the police officer with a gun in his hand inside the doctor's room

Chandigarh: After a 12-hour hunt, the police in Karnal district of Haryana have finally managed to arrest a Sub-Inspector who was caught on camera shooting at a doctor inside a hospital.

The incident happened at the Kalpana Chawla Medical College in Karnal, 130 km from Chandigarh, at about 3 am today. The police arrested the cop, Sub-Inspector Kashmira Singh, this afternoon.

His arrest came after much drama. After looking for him all through the morning, the police got a tip-off that the cop, who was absconding, was hiding at his residence. When they reached his house and surrounded it at around 1 pm, he refused to surrender. The police, however, did not barge into his house fearing he would kill himself or his family with his gun, sources said. The cops then reportedly spoke to his family members over phone and persuaded him to come out.

When inspector Kashmira Singh came to the trauma centre of the hospital early today, he was allegedly drunk and asked the doctor on duty, Nipun Kalra, to fake documents to implicate someone, say sources.

When the doctor refused to oblige, he pulled out his service revolver and opened fire. The doctor moved away just in time to avoid being hit by the bullet.

The incident was recorded on the hospital's CCTV camera.

A grab from the footage shows two other people inside the room when the cop opened fire.
