Mumbai: A report on the state of policing and law and order in Mumbai by NGO Praja has thrown up some alarming figures with number of crimes against women showing a huge rise.

According to the report  the number of rape cases registered in the city has gone up by 47 per cent. In 2012-13 the number of cases registered were 294 whereas in 2013-14 the figure was at 432. The report also states that the first three months this year saw a rise of 31 per cent in registered rape cases when compared to the last three months of 2013.

The number of molestation cases registered has also gone up by 52 per cent. While in 2012-13, the number of molestation cases registered were 793, in 2013-14 it went up to 1,209. The number of registered molestation cases went up by 14 per cent for the first three months this year when compared to the last three months of 2013.

At a press conference held to announce the findings of the report, Nitai Mehta, Managing Trustee of Praja said, "The police has been more open and created systems which encourages citizens to come out and complain about crime and I think we must comment them on that part. But it is a fact that the crime rate is going  up and that is something to worry about."

Mumbai Police PRO Dhananjay Kulkarni told NDTV, "We are studying the report and we will be able to comment on it only after we have gone through the contents."

According to the study, 32 per cent Mumbaikars do not feel safe in the city and 37 per cent don't feel safe travelling by train, which is the city's lifeline. The data from the survey shows that crimes on railway premises have increased sharply this year, especially those against women.

The report is the result of study conducted on a sample size of 22,580 households across the city of Mumbai. Hundred people from each municipal ward participated in the survey.

The survey however has no mention of juvenile crimes specifically, cyber-crime and economic offences. Officials of Praja say that they will focus in these areas in their future reports as these are important suggestions that have come to them.
